Using DNA extracted from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull, the company's scientists employed CRISPR gene-editing technology to modify cells from a living gray wolf—the dire wolf's closest living relative—altering 20 different genetic sites to recreate characteristics of the extinct species. However, many scientists caution that these animals aren't true dire wolves but rather genetically modified gray wolves engineered to resemble their ancient cousins. The pups, two males now six months old and a female just three months old, display distinctive features including larger bodies, broader heads, and thick, light-colored coats that differentiate them from modern gray wolves. #direwolf #crispr #extinction less
