It is meant to supplement food access for disabled people, elderly people, children, and working families whose wages are not livable. Limiting what people can buy with SNAP is harmful because food access is not equal. Many SNAP recipients: •do not have a stove, oven, or refrigerator •are homeless, housing-insecure, or living in motels •are disabled or elderly and cannot stand, cook, or prepare meals •work long hours and rely on quick, ready-to-eat food •have medical conditions like diabetes, hypoglycemia, GI disorders, or malnutrition that require immediate calories or specific foods For someone with blood sugar issues, sugar is not a “treat” it’s a medical need. For someone without a kitchen, prepared food may be the only food they can eat safely. SNAP fraud is already extremely low (about 1–2%), so food restrictions do not meaningfully stop abuse. Instead, they punish millions of people who rely on the program as intended. Food assistance should be about keeping people fed and healthy, not controlling or shaming how poor people eat. One-size-fits-all food rules ignore medical reality, disability, and access and that’s why these restrictions cause real harm. #snap #foodstamps #basichumanrights #disability #elderly less
