Every year, this is a favorite Seattle tradition: 29 Yoshino cherry trees putting on the most breathtaking show on the University of Washington campus. If you’ve never visited during bloom season, put it on your list. These trees have a beautiful history. Originally planted in the 1930s, they were first rooted at the Washington Park Arboretum. They were moved to the UW’s Liberal Arts Quad in 1962 after construction began on State Route 520, which cut across part of the arboretum. Today they are nearly 90 years old and still absolutely magnificent. These trees also symbolize the enduring friendship between Japan and the United States, and represent more than 120 years of history of Japanese and Japanese-American students at the University of Washington. That history makes the blooms even more meaningful to witness. In Japanese culture, cherry blossoms (sakura) carry profound significance. The blossoms are a reminder that life is overwhelmingly beautiful, but also tragically short, a visual reminder of how precious and precarious life is. They bloom for just a week or two each year, which makes showing up to see them feel like such a gift. Today was one of those perfect spring days in Seattle. Go see them while you can! 🌸 📍 UW Quad, Seattle #UWCherryBlossoms #Seattle #SpringInSeattle #Sakura #CherryBlossoms @UW less
