I looked out of my plane window and saw this — and no, it’s not AI. It’s called a glory — a rainbow-like ring that forms around a shadow. It happens when sunlight hits tiny water droplets in clouds, bends, reflects internally, and comes back out — creating a perfect ring centred on whatever is casting the shadow. I’ve only seen it a handful of times… so I went down a rabbit hole. Here are three wild things I learned: 1️⃣ Glories helped inspire the invention of the cloud chamber — a device that went on to discover subatomic particles like the positron and the muon. That work even led to a Nobel Prize. 2️⃣ They don’t just happen on Earth — a glory was observed on Venus in 2011. 3️⃣ In 2024, astronomers spotted a possible glory on the exoplanet WASP-76b, about 617 light-years away. If confirmed, it would be the first one ever seen outside our Solar System. You’ve probably flown above clouds so many times and never known to look for this. Now you do. #Plane #Science #Space #Physics less
