You picture tears, ripped-off glasses, constant reminders. But most of the time? The opposite happens. Because when a baby or toddler has a significant prescription, their brain has never seen the world clearly before. The moment you give them the right glasses, it’s not just “vision correction”—it’s new sensory input their brain has been waiting for. That’s why you see reactions like this: ✨ Looking around in awe ✨ Staring at faces longer ✨ Reaching more accurately for toys It’s not dramatic. It’s neurologic. The visual cortex finally gets clear images, and the brain prefers that clarity. Are there some kids who resist at first? Yes. But it’s usually temporary—and not because they “hate glasses,” but because anything new on their face takes getting used to. A few tips I give my own patients’ parents: • Put glasses on first thing in the morning (before they’re fully awake) • Pair with a favorite, highly visual activity • Stay consistent—taking them off repeatedly can slow adaptation And here’s the part most people don’t realize: It can take up to 6 weeks for their visual system to fully adapt—especially for things like depth perception and hand-eye coordination. So if it’s not perfect on day one, that’s normal. But for many kids… it’s exactly like this video. And once they see clearly, they don’t want to go back. 👓 less
