Here’s what that actually looks like in real life: At -1.00, you might still pass a driver’s test without glasses—but street signs aren’t crisp. At -2.00, your clear vision stops around 20 inches—reading is easy, but the TV is blurry. At -3.00, even faces across the dinner table lose detail. As the numbers go up, your world gets smaller: At -4.00, clear vision is just 10 inches away. At -5.00, you’re reaching for glasses the moment you wake up. At -6.00, anything beyond 6 inches is a blur. This happens because the eye grows too long, so light focuses in front of the retina instead of directly on it. And here’s what most people don’t realize: Once you reach -6.00, that’s considered high myopia—and it increases the lifelong risk of retinal detachment and glaucoma. The good news? We now have ways to slow myopia progression in kids. less
