Only 4% of … more As a nurse anaesthetist working in an Addis Ababa hospital, Kibret Abebe saw first-hand the impact of Ethiopia’s lack of emergency medical services. Only 4% of patients needing emergency care were delivered by ambulance; the rest came by car or taxi. In 2008, Abebe launched @TebitAmbulance, Ethiopia’s first private emergency medical service, using money from the sale of his own house. Today Tebita’s vehicles are a common sight in the capital, and have responded to more than 60,000 emergencies. And it provides subsidized access for people who couldn’t otherwise afford emergency care. Kibret Abebe is a @SchwabFoundation Awardee 2026.
